Why Add EV Charging Points to Your Business?

Installing EV chargers can be an excellent choice for any business, particularly those that own and manage their own car parks. Not only is it a great way to encourage your employees to invest in an electric car when they upgrade, but it can actually become a revenue stream for your business.

Adding commercial EV charging points allows you to offer electricity at a slightly higher rate than cost, will enable your staff to charge their cars for a good price, and bring in revenue that allows you to recoup the installation cost and maintenance.

Electric vehicle charging costs an average of £0.26 per kWh, allowing you to offer an affordable charge to your customers and establish ongoing revenue streams for your business. There are also government grants like the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) that can help you make your commercial EV charger installation even more affordable.

FAQs about commercial EV charging

How do you charge an electric car?

Different EV cars will have different connectors, so always check with the car manufacturer which connection type you have. European EV models (Audi, BMW, Renault, Mercedes, VW and Volvo) tend to have Type 2 inlets normally type 2 in most instances in the rear case it doesn’t fit a adaptor can be used. With home EV chargers, it is as simple as plugging your tethered or untethered cable from your EV charger to your EV car inlet.

Are chargers installed at 0% VAT?

No, EV charger installation and EV chargers are sold with VAT added. They unfortunately do not fall under the same government sustainability program as solar panels which are priced without VAT. We recommend customers do keep up to date with the latest government information in this area though, as this may change to help with wider sustainability goals.

What does it cost to charge an electric car?

This is where home charging and business charging can vary. Businesses tend to have different electricity tariffs to households. For example, a business may get a rate of £0.26 per kWh as they use more power than a residential building. Therefore, to charge an EV with a 62kWh capacity battery would cost £16.12. Again, keep in mind that charging on a public network can cost more. Lamppost chargers cost around 14p per mile and fast chargers around 18p per mile.

What is CCS charging?

This is a common question among EV owners, it relates to the Level 3 or Rapid chargers available at many public charging stations. It is a type of Ev charger connection. Note, not all EV car models will be compatible with a CCS (combined charging system) connection type, always check with your manufacturer. Some CCS type chargers can charge an EV battery in as little as 20 mins, most charge in under 1 hour.

Who makes electric car charging stations?

There are now numerous brands that manufacture EV chargers, at Recharge Renewable we offer (but are not limited to) two high quality brands, whom we are approved installers of. These are Simpson & Partners and Myenergi. Otherwise, should you have purchased from another manufacturer we can still offer our installation services. Check out our EV Charger page for more on our brands and installation services.

Do all electric cars use the same charger?

No, be sure to check your manual or with the manufacturer which connection type your EV car accepts. Most EV’s these days will accept the Type 2 connection which are common in the UK and EU. However, older models or Asian made EV’s tend to use Type 1 connectors. Other than that your model may also be compatible with either the CHAdeMO or CCS chargers as seen in commercial or public charging facilities.

Are there any Grants available for installation of EV at my work place?

Yes, there are government grants available to businesses or even landlords looking to contribute to the public infrastructure of the EV charger network. For a more detailed breakdown we found a handy article about Government Grants and the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) here.
