What we discuss

Introduction

Solar energy is not only a clean and sustainable source of power but also a great way to save on your energy bills. To make the most of your solar panel investment, it’s essential to use the generated electricity efficiently. In this blog, we’ll explore some practical tips on how to maximize your solar savings, from using appliances during the daytime to taking advantage of off-peak winter tariffs and using immersion switches.

Time your appliance use

One of the simplest and most effective ways to maximise solar savings is to use your electrical appliances during the daytime when the sun is shining and your solar panels are generating power. This approach reduces your reliance on grid electricity and allows you to directly utilize the electricity generated by your solar panels. Here are some tips for optimizing your daytime appliance use:

Utilise immersion switches for water heating

One of the most significant energy consumers in a household is the water heater. To make the most of your solar savings, consider installing an immersion switch (also known as a solar diverter or solar hot water controller). This device redirects excess solar electricity that would otherwise be exported to the grid into your water heater, heating your water for free.

How it works

Excess solar electricity is detected by the immersion switch.

The switch diverts this surplus electricity to your water heater’s heating element.

Your water heater heats the water using the free solar energy, reducing the need for grid electricity.

By using an immersion switch, you can substantially reduce your water heating costs and make the most of your solar-generated electricity.

Take Advantage of Off-Peak Winter Tariffs

During the winter months, when daylight hours are shorter, your solar panels may generate less electricity. To compensate for this, some utility companies offer off-peak or time-of-use tariffs, which provide electricity at lower rates during specific hours of the day. By shifting energy-intensive tasks to these off-peak hours, you can save money even when your solar production is limited.
