Post light transformer and call point alarm system

Customer report

A return visit was requested to address a call point alarm issue near the reception desk in a venue building in Plymouth. The reported concern referenced possible low-battery or mains-supply issues affecting the alarm system. A separate issue was also reported involving one bollard or post light transformer towards the cabin land area, where the lighting installation had stopped operating and required replacement works.

Diagnosis & Technical Assessment

Site attendance was recorded for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Assessment of the external post light installation revealed a failed transformer in the bollard lighting system. During the inspection and repair activity, the plug supplying the post light arrangement was also found to be damaged. The transformer was removed and replaced, and the electrical connections were re-terminated as part of the restoration process.

An additional assessment activity was carried out in response to the reported alarm beeping near reception and the toilet area within the venue building. The beeping source was identified as a detector positioned by the toilets and reception area. Aston Fire and Security attended during the visit and diagnosed the detector fault. Their assessment confirmed that the detector would need to be replaced.

The completed assessment separated the lighting fault from the alarm system issue, allowing the post-light repair works and alarm diagnosis activities to be handled independently during the attendance.

Solutions delivered

The external post light system was restored by replacing the failed transformer and re-terminating the associated electrical connections. During the repair process, the damaged plug connected to the post light arrangement was also addressed. A spare faulty unit available on site was used to source a replacement plug component, allowing the lighting system to be reinstated and returned to operation.

The alarm-related issue in the venue building was assessed separately after identifying the detector responsible for the beeping near reception and the toilets. Aston Fire and Security diagnosed the detector fault during attendance and confirmed that the detector would be replaced separately.

The completed works focused on restoring the operation of the failed lighting installation while isolating the fire and security fault to the affected detector component within the alarm system arrangement.

  • Post light plug
  • Call point alarm system
  • Detector by toilets and reception

Outcome & Results

The post light installation was restored to working condition following transformer replacement, re-termination and plug repair works completed during site attendance in Plymouth. The source of the beeping alarm was identified as a detector positioned near the toilets and reception area in the venue building. Aston Fire and Security confirmed the detector fault and stated that replacement of the affected detector would be completed separately.

Repair vs Replacement

This attendance involved both repair and replacement activities, depending on the condition of the affected components. The failed post light transformer was replaced after assessment confirmed the lighting installation was no longer operating correctly. The damaged plug in the lighting system was repaired with a compatible spare component on site, allowing restoration of the existing installation without full replacement of the post assembly. The alarm issue followed a separate assessment pathway, where the beeping detector was identified and isolated for replacement by the attending fire and security contractor.
