Battery Storage Sites: Choosing the Ideal Location for Battery Storage

Home » Solar Power » Battery Storage Sites: Choosing the Ideal Location for Battery Storage
What we discuss
Introduction
Battery storage sites, the big question is always – where should I mount my batteries and inverter?
At recharge renewable we focus on the temperature surrounding battery and inverter positons.
I hear you ask, Why temperature? Well, both hot and cold environments have a negative impact on solar systems and battery storage. Batteries require a minimum temperature to enable them to charge; discharging is not such a big problem, but it can be limited by colder temperatures.
Storing batteries in the Loft
Pros:
Temperature Stability:
Lofts generally offer a more stable temperature environment. This can be advantageous for battery performance, as ideal operating temperatures typically range from 15°C to 35°C and lofts often fall within this range. During the extremes of a summer day, we do see lofts reach peaks of over 40 degrees, but batteries will easily operate up to around 55deg.
Cleaner Environment:
Lofts tend to be less prone to dust and humidity compared to garages.
which can benefit battery longevity. While most inverters have an IP rating of IP65 allowing them to be externally mounted to keep them in prime condition, we opt for dryer-cleaner conditions, favouring loft mounting.
Cons:
- Limited Accessibility: Lofts can be challenging to access for maintenance and inspection.
- Tricky for installation we use a hoist system to aid installation.
- Structural Considerations: The weight of our battery choice 5.8 (kWh) 60KG comparable to a small adult in weight. We always mount to structural timers in the roof space or into the wall. Never are they place on the floor loose. We tend to stick to our favourite brand, Solax, due to there warranty and customer service ( they answer in under 2min ready to log into your system)
- Ventilation: old-style felt roofs have poor ventilation, which can lead to high heat build-up.
Storing batteries in the garage
Pros:
- Temperatures can remain stable during the summer months, allowing batteries to remain at an optimum temperature..
- Convenient Access: Garages provide easy access for installation, maintenance, and monitoring.
- Strong Structures: Garages typically have robust structures capable of supporting the weight of the battery, eliminating concerns about structural modifications.
Cons:
- Performance : Garages can experience larger temperature fluctuations during winter. Temperature of 0 and below the battery will not allow charge due to the damaged that can occur on the battery plates. Battery temperature are visible on the app if hybrid solax is used.
- Cable routes can we tricky as often they are detached from the home creating further cost for ground workers to create cable trenches.
